FAQs About Smoke Alarms
What are the different Types of Smoke Alarms?
Smoke alarms for home use typically fall into two categories: ionisation and photoelectric. Photoelectric smoke alarms are usually much faster at detecting smoky fires because they react to the presence of particles rather than ionisation. In a typical house, fire has been proven to burn materials slowly and produce thick smoke for up to several hours before flaring into flames. Early detection of fires while they’re smouldering is crucial for putting out the fire or escape.
Studies have shown that photoelectric sensors typically respond within 3-5 minutes, while those using ionisation take significantly longer (upwards of 20 minutes), by which time escape will be more difficult. This is why experts and the Australian government recommend photoelectric smoke detectors for households.
Can I install smoke alarms myself?
Smoke alarms save lives, and installing one yourself is not a task you consider doing. In Australia, only licensed electricians can install your smoke alarm and can ensure it works as it should and prevent electrical issues from arising. A certified electrician must also install a smoke alarm connected to main power. Photoelectric smoke alarms can often be installed easily with little effort.
Only well-placed, working smoke alarms can provide the critical early warning needed to save lives.
Is it illegal not to have smoke alarms?
Western Australian law requires every home and business to be equipped with a smoke alarm. A hardwired power supply is needed for every house built after 1st July 1997. Since 1st October 2009, mains-powered smoke alarms must also be fitted in all existing residential buildings prior to the transfer of ownership, rent or hire.
Should smoke detectors be on the ceiling or wall?
- The smoke alarm must be located in the centre of the ceiling.
- You can install a smoke alarm on a wall as long as it sits between 300mm and 500mm from the ceiling.
- Ideally, a cathedral ceiling should be 500mm to 1500mm from the smoke alarm.
How long do smoke detectors last?
As specified and regulated by Australian Standard 3786, smoke detectors last up to 10 years. After a decade, they must be replaced to comply with industry recommendations-but don’t worry! If you can’t find a date of manufacture or expiration date on your unit, contact the manufacturer or supplier. They will provide you with the details.
Why is my smoke alarm flashing?
A red light on all smoke alarms flashes momentarily every 40-60 seconds to indicate their operation. When the smoke alarm is activated, the red light flashes continuously. Fast flashing red lights indicate which smoke alarm initiated the alarm if there are interconnected smoke alarms.
What should I know about smoke alarms?
When they are faulty or have low batteries, smoke alarms will make a “beep” or “chirping” sound.
In the case of an extended mains power outage, the smoke alarm may also alert you to low battery. Your smoke alarm will need a new battery if this occurs.
Batteries do not always need to be replaced in a battery-powered smoke alarm.
Smoke alarms. Non-replaceable smoke alarms may come with a warning that the batteries are not replaceable. If you need to replace your battery, always check the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
In order to operate properly, smoke alarms powered by mains electricity must have a green “Power ON” LED indicator. Connecting the alarm to the mains power will cause it to light up.
After replacing the battery, ensure the smoke detector is working by holding down the test button until an alert tone is heard. A smoke alarm must be maintained regularly.
All smoke alarms require replacement every ten years.
